What is self-care and why is it important?

Why be Self-focused?

Sounds like common sense, right? Putting ourselves first. How is it then that it can take until we are in our 30’s, 40,s, 50’s and in some cases it doesn’t happen at all. How is it that we can prioritise the needs and wants of others for years whilst putting ourselves on the back burner? It comes down to conditioning, we are actually conditioned from birth to do what your parents and others think is good for you, what they think you are talented at, how you should behave, speak, smile or not. They do not necessarily mean any harm, it’s just that they do not know any better…conditioned.

How we become conditioned

When you hit school self-focus becomes further removed from our being. You then face teachers judging you with a red pen, enforcing their opinions, political and personal, having the power to make you feel good or bad. Many people can have their natural confidence knocked out of them over the school lifetime.

Then we get career advice ‘A’ Levels? Apprenticeship? Hairdressing? Straight to a job? For many of us these were the standard options presented and we are in a mindset where we are told what to do and it becomes natural to do as we are told. For some this path is the right one and being a Hairdresser or a Teacher came from an inner burning desire and curiosity.

However for many, we go along with what we are supposed to do, which will make our families ‘proud’ so more and more years get lost to external forces. I’m not saying that this is the same for everyone, some people are truly in tune with themselves and follow their hearts desires. Some of us get completely lost in the whirlwind of others and what we are meant to do.

Then Something Clicks

It can be a person, situation or circumstance that triggers you to start thinking about What’s going on with me? How did I get here? Where have I been for the last 10 years? Have you had that feeling that you have coasted through life, not being totally conscious and present and/or existing; we won’t go into too much detail here i’ll talk about it more in a future post.
